This is the special friend I referred to at the bottom of this post: Visitor.
He’s smart, unique, great at conversation, an amazing musician, nice, a home body, sarcastic, loved, a music snob, predictably unpredictable, caring, a pastor’s son, human, an artist, a friend.
Tim Burton is remaking Alice in Wonderland?! I think I’m more excited right now than I have been in a long time. Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter is the Red Queen (I loved them together in Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street). Instead of being a total remake, they’re creating a sort-of sequel to the original Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. 10 years later, 17 year old Alice attends a party at a Victorian estate. She realizes she’s about to be proposed to, so she runs away, finding her way back to Wonderland via a certain white rabbit that’s been looking for her for years.
It’s kind of a mixture of some distorted live action and animation. I can’t relate it to anything because I’m not sure what to relate it to. It’s kind of new territory for me. -Tim Burton
I can’t wait to see how it turns out! The movie is due to hit theaters March 5, 2010. You will find me there, sporting 3D glasses.
June 30, 2009 - 12:08 amKerri - Thanks for the heads up - I can't wait to see this! Anything with Johnny Depp is bound to be good. Heck, anything by Tim Burton is bound to be good! I'll have to see this one with you.
Yesterday, I was asked by an acquaintance from work, “Is that your little sister?” Hehe, that was great. Most people just bluntly say, “You’re too young to have a kid!” I know! But I’m truly loving it. When girls (and some boys) are little, all they do is play with dolls and barbies and dream of growing up and having kids. Now I’m living the dream!
She’s an amazing girl and I’m extremely proud of her. Our conversations have deepened and our friendship has strengthened in the last six years. She’s truly the best thing that’s ever happened to me.
I took her out for her first mini-shoot since her birthday and this was the result. She’s BEAUTIFUL!
June 22, 2009 - 7:10 pmAng - ohmyheavens.
you crimped her hair.
she is now, quite official, a mini-shalina. gorgeous, gorgeous girl.
:)
June 23, 2009 - 10:19 pmRachel - These are all awesome! I agree with Ang, and L-O-V-E the hair!
June 30, 2009 - 12:11 amKerri - These are beautiful pictures! She is such a gorgeous little girl. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking that Hayden will be 6 in the not too far away future. She could totally model btw...
July 1, 2009 - 12:31 pmTiana - She really is an amazing gift.
Can I somehow get a couple of these from you? I'd love to frame them when we move to our new house one day soon. Excellent photos, Shalina. Amazing daughter you have.
Last night, I had the priviledge of taking some night shots of my brother’s band, Stomacher. It was nice to let go of my usual day time, natural light shooting and challenge myself a bit. Thanks guys, I had a lot of fun!
There’s an excitement that comes with visiting a foreign city or town. I’m able to look around and really see everything with untainted eyes. I tend to feel a longing to just up and move there, just to have a different life than the one I have now. A life that might actually be fulfilling. I figure I’d have better opportunities and I’d be more motivated to change the things in my life that need to be changed. I’d be in a city full of new experiences to be had, new people to meet. Maybe I’d open a cute little shop and be super relaxed and laid back about everything. I’d be a better mom. I’d keep my house perfectly clean with flowers in a vase on my counter every day. I’d wake up smiling and hop out of bed, throw on my tiny pre-mom jeans and go make a healthy breakfast…
Wait. I think I’ve watched too many movies.
Today, I woke up at 10am to my daughter wanting help playing Build-A-Bear on her Nintendo DSi. I played with her for an hour, then packed her a bag to go camping with her auntie and cousin for the next couple days. Her dad showed up to pick her up, I kissed her goodbye and sent them off. Then I jumped in the shower and dressed myself in a comfy shirt that doesn’t make me feel insecure, jeans, and flips. Threw on some makeup and jumped in the car to head out. I parked in the garage near the square where I spend most of my free time. I got out and walked downtown in the city I grew up in. The city I still live in to this day. Everywhere I look, I have a memory, whether good or bad. It’s like I’ve touched every single piece of this place. Right now, I’m sitting in my favorite coffee shop in a big, comfy, brown, leather chair. The doors and windows are all open and the breeze is blowing in at a perfect temperature and speed. I can see the playground in the park from where I’m sitting with kids crawling all over it. There’s upbeat music playing and I’ve just devoured a decaf iced mocha and a muffin while writing this. I’m looking around, trying to see my surroundings as a visitor. Pretending that I have this strong desire to up and move here because it’s so exciting. I feel peaceful. Lucky. Content. All in this usually blurred (cause I’m in a hurry), typical (cause it’s so routine), stressful (cause I’m human) city that I grew up in.
Of course, I’d still love to make a huge change and move away to a new city some day (we only live once!), but until that’s possible, I’ll try to sit back and enjoy the way I can predict the traffic flow on any given day, or the smell of the staircase when leaving my apartment complex, or the buildings I’ll pass on my way to work. I’ll try to improve what I can improve and find a way to accept what is out of my control. I want to live my life as if I’m finally getting the chance I’ve been waiting for.
Now I’m off to go shoot some photos of a special friend of mine, simply because I want to.
Last weekend, I did a newborn session for my friend, Kerri. I also shot her maternity photos a while back: Kerri’s Belly. She made such a beautiful little baby! I had a great time during this shoot and have been so excited to post these photos. Enjoy!

I had the pleasure of joining my mom on her high school reunion May 21st through May 26th. She went to an American boarding school in Kenya, Africa, so many of the students have dispersed around the world. It was really nice to be able to put a face with some of the names she’s been talking about for years now.
We flew to a city called San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. One of my mom’s classmates, Eucled, lives there with his wife and two boys. The city was amazing! I absolutely fell in love with everything about it. The buildings, the streets, the shops, the culture, the people. I will be there again, and hopefully for a longer stay.
This is the Bed & Breakfast we stayed at called Casa Angelitos. It was so much nicer than I had imagined!
Friday night, we all met at Eucled & Laura’s house for a homemade Indian dinner.
These are the lovely people that attended the reunion.
Lastly, the doors and windows. There’s so much left to the imagination when walking down the cobblestone streets of San Miguel.
May 31, 2009 - 8:41 pmAng - My mouth is on the floor... wow. Amazing images friend! I can see why you'd want to go back - if only I were a flyer I'd join you :) Can we drive?
Oh and I'm seeing tons of fun "textures" you should pass my way. Love you!
June 1, 2009 - 8:13 amKerri - Amazing pictures chica! I'm loving the colors and textures. You did a great job capturing the beautiful town, people, and places you visited.
Saturday, I met up with the Capristo family at Old Borges Ranch in Walnut Creek for a family/maternity session. It was SO hot out, but we managed to have a successful shoot anyhow :) I had a great time with this little family of 3 (soon to be 4!)
I managed to get mommy and daddy alone for a few shots. What a beautiful couple!
